Tsui Hark a étudié le cinéma au Texas dans les années 70, avant de devenir l’un des cinéastes majeurs du cinéma de Hong Kong de ces vingt dernières années. Auteur d’un parcours tout à fait exceptionnel en tant que réalisateur, producteur, scénariste, monteur, musicien et parfois même acteur, cet homme cinéma s’est engagé dans une soixantaine de projets dont certains comptent déjà parmi les incontestables chefs d’œuvres du cinéma cantonais. Il a réussi à donner un nouveau souffle à l’industrie locale en relançant des genres en perte de vitesse comme le polar avec A Better Tomorrow en 1986, le film en costumes avec Histoires de fantômes chinois en 1987, le film de sabre avec Swordman en 1990 et le film de kung fu avec Once Upon A Time In China en 1991.
