Bien que née en Chine lors de l’année 1948, Li Ching est un pur produit hongkongais puisqu’elle passe la totalité de son enfance dans la ville des parfums. Dès sa quinzième année, elle rejoint les cours de comédies de la Shaw Brothers et obtient rapidement quelques petits rôles, notamment dans The Story of Sue San (1964), un opéra chinois signé King Hu. L’année suivante, le drame historique Inside the Forbidden City marque le véritable point de départ de sa carrière. Elle y joue, au côté d’ Ivy Ling Po, l’une des deux concubines tentant d’attirer l’attention de l’empereur. Le script a la particularité d’être co-écrit par Chang Cheh.
Puis, toujours en 1965, elle obtient un prix d’interprétation à l’Asian Film Festival pour son rôle dans le classique The Mermaid, une comédie fantastique également scénarisée par un Chang Cheh très inspiré puisque l’histoire raconte les pérégrinations d’une carpe millénaire qui décide de devenir humaine et se transforme en une jeune héritière dépouillée de ses biens. Cette reconnaissance critique fait de Li Ching la nouvelle star incontournable du catalogue Shaw Brothers. La « Baby Queen », surnom qui lui donné, devient alors l’une des actrices les plus demandées de l’époque. Elle joue dans tous les genres qu’offre le cinéma HK des années 70, accrochant à sa filmographie la quasi-totalité des grands réalisateurs de l’époque.
Sa carrière s’achève officiellement en 1978 avec The Chase de John Law, même si elle réapparaîtra aux côtés du fantasque Richard Ng en 1989 dans Excuse Me Please, ainsi que de manière plus anecdotique dans Conjugal Affairs et Hope, respectivement tourné en 1994 et 1995.
