Plot |
|
Many screen versions have been made of this classic Chinese love story, but auteur Li Han-hsiang's version is the most popular of them all. Yen Chuan plays the weak emperor, whose obsession with his consort, Yang Kwei Fei (played by the ever-elegant and ever-sensual Li Li-hua) makes him leaves the running of the country to his Prime Minister (Yang Chi-ching), who happens to be Yang Kwei Fei's brother. Unfortunately, the cruel and selfish Prime Minister's decisions leave the empire in shambles. "Magnificent" is the only word that could describe this exquisite production. (IVL)
