Site History
The HKCinemagic experience started in late 1998, when two fanatics of Hong Kong cinema, Laurent Henry and Thomas Podvin , had the wish to share their passion for two great contemporary directors: Tsui Hark and Wong Kar Wai . “Our aim was to offer content, more than form, texts which could bring food for thought on Hong Kong cinema. Informative and analytic material. That was the editorial line, which, moreover, we have kept so far.”
hkcinemagic 1 : the early stages

Very quickly, new writers joined us: Master Cyco , a then Category 3 specialist, and François Henry , a thriller and Jackie Chan fanatic. The site was filled out with a big file on thrillers and a Bis Zone section, putting together B, Z movies and others. David-Olivier was in charge of a DVD section, a medium which was then brand new.

The few pages available on Wanadoo France (a French internet service provider) grew bigger and bigger. The website was transferred onto the free hosting service ifrance.com, which is still the case.

the arrival of hkcinemagic 2

Other lovers joined, and among them, Jean-Louis Ogé , who already had the ambition to create a photo gallery of HK stars with several entries. He quickly put in place a database with biographies, filmographies and identity photos. Our dear technician Marc helped him with the technical structure of the project.

Endowed with a growing database however not exploitable nor operational yet, Jean-Louis created HKCinemagic2, the encyclopedia of HK cinema , in February 2003. His site was specialized in stars photo galleries and Shaw Brothers films. Many other writers have since joined the project. Hats off to Arnaud Lanuque , David-Olivier Vidouze, Stéphane Jaunin , Philippe Quevillart , Florent d'Azevedo or Christopher Violet.

the birth of hkcinemagic.com

As the two sites grew bigger and bigger, a forum was installed on Hiwit.com in June 2003. In view of its success, a new one is created, more modern and friendlier: this is the current Invision forum, born on May 1 st, 2004.

More and more appealed to, for more than a year Marc has been working away furiously at putting up a genuine database which is entertaining, informative, practical and pleasant to look at, endowed with numerous files on films, people, studios and glossary, flanked with an editorial section which offers, on top of this, feature articles, reviews, essays, exclusive interviews and reports.

Therefore, this is after many years of hard work, that we can present you this website, which, we all hope here, will delight you.

Have a pleasant reading and surfing.
