Gary Wong's website 電影朝聖 Film Pilgrimage also itemizes some of this filming locations, but in traditional Chinese.
Ever since film crews ventured outside soundstages and studio lots, Hong Kong has been a rather cinema-friendly city. Production teams shot on the streets with
or without permits, recording forever on film some of the most interesting locations: rooftops, restaurants, alleyways, harbours, malls, etc.
We have attempted to map the different places in HK appearing on HK films (mainly, but we expanded a bit our horizons, see
the list of pages). Aware that many actual locations have now disappeared and it is impossible to itemize every places seen in every film, we have listed below some of the most interesting places, worth visiting. For places marked in Google Maps we have included an actual photograph
of the location (not a "behind the scene" photo of a dressed set), a Youtube clip, and a small comment on the location and its relevance in the film(s) it appears.
An embedded map is available at the bottom of each page
with a link redirecting to Google Maps. Maps can be zoomed in and out for a better view of the area or the markers.
Hong Kong is roughly divided into two areas, the main
Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. That’s how we’ve based our mapping, dividing further by districts or groups of districts. Of course more areas will appear as we gather more material.
This feature is an
ongoing project and if you own a photograph of a place in HK that appeared in a movie, you can also contribute.
If you spot mistakes or find that a place no longer exists, email us at hkfilminglocation@hkcinemagic.com.
Central & Western District --Plenty of locations and landmarks in Central, the so-called business centre of HK, and Sheung Wan have survived the spread of the concrete development and the handover. The district offers some remnants of the past colonial era, which have inspired filmmakers such as Wong Kar-wai, Johnnie To or even Peter Chan. (Map of the area)
Info on the district can be found on the Home Affairs Department website.

White House, Mt. Davis 摩 星嶺白屋
new
Location: A Disused House known by locals as ‘White House,’ junction between Victoria Road and Mt. Davis Path, Western District, HK Island 摩星嶺白屋,域多利道與摩星嶺徑交界 Film: 2046 (2004) / Dir: Wong Kar-wai 王家衛
At the junction of Victoria Road and Mount Davis Path, there is a white house enclosed by walls and barbwires. This house has neither name nor street number. It is only known by locals as the ‘White House.’ It is said that this White House served, under the British ruling, as a place for the Police Department to detain political prisoners. During the 1967 riots many leftists, such as movie stars Fu Qi and Shi Hui, were held captive here.
Now the White House is vacant and is used as a movie location from time to time. In Wong Kar-Wai’s 2046 (2004), the White House becomes the Oriental Hotel.
The Oriental Hotel in 2046 (2004)
In Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution, it is used as the secret home of Mr. Yee (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) in Hong Kong. The strong political background of the house adequately matches the atmosphere of this film.

Shek Tong Tsui /石塘咀
Location: Hill Road, Shek Tong Tsui, Hong Kong 石 塘咀 山道 Film: Rouge 胭脂扣 (1988) / Dir: Stanley Kwan 關錦鵬
Shek Tong Tsui is located east of Kennedy Town and west of Sai Ying Pun, in the HK Island. In the early 20th century, Shek Tong Tsui was a notorious place for prostitution. Following a fire that destroyed many brothels in Possession Street, Governor Matthew Nathan ordered in 1904 that all remaining houses of prostitution of Sheung Wan be moved to Shek Tong Tsui. The prostitution economy was used to develop the area. Shek Tong Tsui thus became a red light district, where pornography, gambling dens and drug flourished. At this time, bordellos were found in Hill Road, South Lane and Woo Hop Street. The quarter has since developed into a normal area without illegal activities.
In Rouge, the love affair between Fleur (Anita Mui) and Chan Chen-Pang (Leslie Cheung) starts and ends there.
