Née à Guangzhou, Lau Hak Suen s'est immergée dans le monde de l'opéra de Canton certainement sous l'influence de son père, Baiju Rong, lui-même étoile de l'opéra. A 12 ans, elle se produit avec la troupe Juexiansherng, sous le nom de Bai Xuexian, puis diverses troupes pendant la guerre, dont la New East Asia Opera Troupe. A 16 ans, elle interprétait les rôles principaux pour la troupe Jintianhua avant de rejoindre la troupe Xinsheng où elle jouera pour un long moment avec l'actrice Ren Jianhui (surtout des rôles d'homme), tout en continuant à se produire avec d'autres troupes. En 1956, les deux femmes formèrent la troupe Xianfengming. Elles se retirent toutes les deux en 1966 pour raison de santé. Lau Hak Suen apparaîtra dans 200 films entre 1947 et 1968, pour beaucoup en tant que premier rôle. Certains sont des adaptations de ses rôles principaux à l'opéra.
