Chorégraphe peu connu du grand public car resté dans l'ombre des plus grands avec lesquels il a souvent collaboré, Hsu Hsia n'en est pas moins très compétent dans l'art difficile de la représentation cinématographique des combats martiaux.
Sa formation initiale ne nous est pas connue, probablement de l'opéra de Pékin dans une des deux écoles de Hong Kong spécialisées dans cet art. Il se lance dans le métier en tant que cascadeur en 1966 et va travailler principalement pour la Shaw Brothers durant 10 ans. On pourra l'apercevoir dans nombres d'oeuvres majeures du studio comme Vengeance ! ou Killer Clans. A l'occasion, il travaillera aussi pour la Golden Harvest (Hapkido, Stoner...) mais ce ne sera que très occasionnel.
Du coté de 1977/78, il est débauché par la Seasonal de Ng See Yuen qui saura l'utiliser au mieux. Il apparaîtra ainsi dans The Secret Rivals Part 2 ou Drunken Master et, surtout, participera à la chorégraphie de ce dernier. Car c'est durant cette période clé que Hsu Hsia a ajouté une corde à son arc en devenant chorégraphe. Sa compétence dans le domaine sera vite établie et Hsu ne manquera pas de propositions de travail. Il signera (ou co-signera) les excellentes chorégraphies de films comme Five Super Fighters ou Ring Of Death et réalisera même son premier long métrage, The Eighteen Jade Arhats
La Shaw fera tout son possible pour récupérer les services du talentueux Hsu et parviendra à le reprendre sous contrat en 1980. Il sera en charge d'une dizaine de films en 5 ans (un faible nombre, il travaillait probablement à la T.V.B. en même temps) que ce soit en tant que chorégraphe ou réalisateur. Bien que ces films soient quasiment tous tombés dans l'oubli, il s'agit de véritables petites merveilles du genre : Roar Of The Lion, I Will Finally Knock You Down, Dad ou Kid From Kwangtung, pour ne citer que ceux-là, sont des oeuvres hautement recommandées à tous fans de films de Kung Fu !
Après l'arrêt de la production cinématographique du studio en 1985, Hsu peine un peu à se reconvertir dans le nouveau paysage cinématographique local. La Shaw avait été une prison dorée qui avait empêché Hsu de réaliser l'évolution des goûts du public en matière d'action. Il travaillera un peu pour Samo Hung (Righting Wrongs grâce auquel il sera nominé aux Hong Kong Movie Awards) avant de se spécialiser dans le polar d'action, proche des Girls With Guns. Il travaillera ainsi souvent avec le spécialiste du genre, Wong Chun Yeung, et son collègue/ami Chui Fat (il semblerait que les deux hommes aient montés leur propre société de production), co-réalisant ensemble Cheetah On Fire ou Crystal Hunt.
En 1994, il fait une dernière apparition dans le Drunken Master II de son collègue de la Shaw, Lau Kar Leung, jouant le chef des assassins à la machette. Après ce caméo hommage, il semble avoir définitivement pris sa retraite.
