Michael Lai est un artiste reconnu à Hong Kong. Il tient ses dons pour la musique de son père Lai Zou-Tin, qui était un chef d'orchestre reconnu là-bas, et c'est dès l'âge de 6 ans que Michael fit ses premières armes dans le show-business. Il commença d'abord à composer des musiques pour les studios de télévision, puis il devient le directeur de Capital Artists.
Mais Michael Lai est avant tout connu pour avoir composé pas mal de chansons de Jackie Chan qu'il chantait pour ses propres films tels Project A, Police Story, Project A II, Armour Of God et Dragons Forever. Outre ses talents de musiciens, Michael Lai s'aventure dans la comédie en participant à quelques petits cameo comme par exemple dans Police Story où il incarne un gardien de parking. Outre son amitié avec Jackie, il fut également un grand ami de Bruce Lee et de Liu Chia Liang.
