Gordon Chan est né à Hong Kong en 1960. Formé au département des effets spéciaux à la compagnie Shaw Brothers, Gordon Chan se dirige vers une carrière de scénariste au milieu des années 80. D’abord à la botte du réalisateur Taylor Wong (Behind The Yellow Line, 1984), il est embauché par Tsui Hark pour signer le scénario de The Big Heat (1988).
Associé à Jackie Chan sur plusieurs comédies, il passe finalement à la réalisation avec The Yuppie Fantasia, une comédie dramatique sur un groupe de golden-boys hong kongais. Le succès du film, aussi immense qu’inattendu va permettre à Chan de se frotter au cinéma américain d’action dont la popularité à Hong Kong l’agace. Sur les traces de son ami et mentor John Woo (pour lequel il a écrit certaines scènes de A Toute épreuve ), Gordon Chan entame un série de films d’action surprenants.
Aux USA, il sera finalement reconnu à travers le chef d’oeuvre Fist of Legend avec Jet Li, qui propulsera la carrière américaine de Yuen Woo Ping (chorégraphe du film) : c’est en voyant notamment celui-ci que les frères Wachowski allaient l’embaucher pour leur Matrix.
