Une des premières stars masculines que l’on doit à la Shaw Brothers, Zhao Lei est né à Beijing en 1928. Il émigre à Hong Kong en 1947 et travaillera en tant qu’employé de banque, jusqu’en 1953, date à laquelle il rejoint les rangs du studio des frères Shaw.
Le gros de sa carrière se fera sur les plateaux de Clearwater Bay, sur une période de près de 20 ans. Sa spécialité sera de jouer les empereurs, un type de rôle qu’il interprètera à foison durant sa période de gloire (les années 50/début 60). C’est ainsi lui l’empereur séducteur de The Kingdom And The Beauty.
En 1964, il change de camp et se met sous contrat avec la Cathay. Il apparaîtra dans plus d’une dizaine de productions du studio mais ne parviendra pas à retrouver le statut de star qu’il avait quand il travaillait à la Shaw Brothers.
Zhao Lei décède le 24 juin 1996.
