Wai Cheung, surnommé "le singe" par ses pairs, est un vieux de la vieille dans le petit monde des cascadeurs. Il commença sa carrière à la fin des années 70, en tant que membre de l'équipe de Lau Kar Leung et Lau Kar Wing, ce qui vaut de l'apercevoir principalement dans des films de la Shaw Brothers mais aussi quelques productions indépendantes ou de la Golden Harvest quand l'un des frères (Kar Wing surtout) s'y aventure. Mak suivra ses mentors pendant jusqu'à la fin des années 80.
Originellement, "monkey" a une formation de gymnaste mais il ne fait pas de doute qu'il a depuis touché à d'autres arts de combats car sa petite taille cache un artiste martial de très bon niveau. Il aura vraiment l'occasion de le prouver quand on lui accordera des (trop rares) seconds rôles martiaux. Ce sera ainsi le cas dans Disciples Of The 36th Chamber où il joue un des frères de Fong Sai Yuk et, surtout, dans Legend Of The Wolf en tant qu'expert de la technique du singe (pas étonnant vu son surnom !). Malheureusement, son visage gentillet semble l'avoir handicapé dans sa carrière et les quelques seconds rôles qu'il obtient pour des films se voient invariablement suivis par une période où il retourne aux activités du cascadeur moyen.
Finalement, après plus de 10 ans, il finit par monter en grade en s'occupant de la chorégraphie. Il s'y essaye d'abord avec le moyen Stars And Roses avant de s'imposer en 96 sur quelques productions à petit budget puis aux cotés de Donnie Yen sur ses premières réalisations.
