Une véritable institution hongkongaise, Lydia était une enfant actrice dans les années 60 souvent aux cotés de Josephine Siao et Connie Chan.
Elle est née en 1947, à Shanghai, dans une famille nombreuse (6 sœurs et 3 frères) qui déménagea à HK quand elle était très jeune. A 12 ans, elle apprend par une amie que la Shaw Brothers recherche une jeune actrice avec un peu de poids. Elle tente sa chance à l’insu de ses parents et obtient le rôle. Fort de ce succès, elle abandonne l’école pour se consacrer à sa carrière. Elle ne va pas le regretter ! Lydia sera à l'affiche de gros succès commerciaux où son bagout et son physique font merveille pour déclencher les rires du public. Le film emblématique de cette période, c'est The House Of 72 Tenants, qui contribuera à remettre le cantonais sur le devant de la scène.
Dans les années 70/80, elle commence à se diversifier, apparaissant régulièrement à la télévision encore plus qu’au cinéma. Niveau ciné, on peut tout de même la voir dans la série populaire des Mad Mad World et le bien nommé Double Fattiness.
Depuis quelques années, elle n’est plus apparue au cinéma mais elle reste très présente dans le quotidien des Hong Kongais en apparaissant à la TV, dans des publicités et divers grands événements de la vie locale. Niveau carnet rose, elle fut l'épouse de Adam Cheng dont elle divorça par la suite.
En 2006, Lydia Shum est admise à l'hôpital pour un cancer qui s'était déclaré au niveau de la vésicule biliaire. Elle eut ensuite des problèmes au niveau du coeur et des poumons... Ses 3 dernières années de vie furent rythmées par des allers-retours entre sa maison et l'hôpital. Manifestant une volonté de vivre, elle s'offrit les plaisirs de la vie (la bouffe surtout...) à chaque rémission de sa maladie.
L'actrice est décédée au Queen Mary Hospital de Hong Kong le mardi 19 février 2008, à 8h35 (heure locale), après 3 années de lutte contre de terribles maladies... Lydia Shum était très célèbre non seulement à Hong Kong, mais également dans toute l'Asie et dans tous les chinatowns du monde...
