Né en 1918 dans la province de Jiansu, il débute sa carrière cinématographique par le métier d’acteur pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Avec la Central Motion Picture Theatre Troupe, Lo Wei commence à se faire connaître à Shanghai. Après la guerre, il s’installe à Hong Kong où il se fait remarquer dans son interprétation du général Yuan Shikai dans Sorrow of the Forbidden City en 1948. Dès lors, tout s’accélère et Lo Wei devient même l’idole des petites minettes de la colonie britannique.
Mais les années passent, et sentant sa fin proche, Lo décide de fonder sa propre compagnie de production : la Sze Wei. Cette dernière produit moult de mélodrames, comme il avait l’habitude d’en faire auparavant. Cependant, malgré quelques succès, Lo Wei rejoint la Shaw Brothers en 1965 où il y réalisera 17 films en moins de 6 ans. Là, il devient petit à petit le nouveau maître des wu xia pian avec son actrice fétiche : Cheng Pei-pei. En 1971, après le schisme de Raymond Chow vis à vis de la Shaw Brothers, Lo Wei suit Chow pour la Golden Harvest qu’il vient de créer. Il continue dans le même style de films et y impose une nouvelle furie : Nora Miao.
Mais le nom de Lo Wei reste dans les mémoires des cinéphiles pour avoir surtout dirigé les films HK de Bruce Lee. Mais à la mort de la star, la Golden harvest confia à Lo le soin de diriger ses remplaçants dont Jimmy Wang Yu. Après quelques bons petits films, ses tentatives de s’internationaliser (il tournera 2 films à San Francisco dont un avec Chuck Norris !) échouent et Lo décide de partir à Taiwan en 1975 où il fonde sa propre compagnie : la Lo Wei Motion Pictures. Hélas, le succès n’est une fois de plus pas au rendez-vous jusqu’à sa rencontre avec la future star numéro 1 de Hong Kong : Jackie Chan. Avec l’Irresistible, le maître lui confie l’un de ses premiers vrais rôles comiques, repris plus tard par le fabuleux Yuen Woo-ping (avec le triomphe du Maître Chinois).
Après quelques entourloupes avec son dernier protégé, Lo Wei se retire du monde du cinéma, laissant derrière lui quelques noms d’acteurs illustres qui ont marqué à jamais l’histoire cinématographique de Hong Kong.
