A ne pas confondre avec son homonyme Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Tony Leung Kar-fai est né en 1957 à Hong Kong. Fils de projectionniste de films occidentaux, c'est naturellement que le jeune garçon est attiré par les lumière du cinéma. Adulte, il suivra donc des cours d'arts dramatique à la T.V.B. ... pendant neuf mois. Il arrête ses études pour former avec quelques amis un magazine d'arts et de spectacles.
C'est par cet intermédiaire qu'il peut approcher le show business et se fait engager par le chinois Li Han-hsiang pour jouer dans son Burning Of Imperial Palace. C'est pour cette interprétation que Leung remporte le HK Award du meilleur acteur en 1983. Guerre froide entre les deux Chine oblige, l'acteur se fait boycotté par les distributeurs taiwannais. De ce manque à gagner à l'exportation, les producteurs HK dénigrent Leung pendant trois ans. Après cette période de vache maigre, il revient sur le devant de la scène et se fait surtout remarquer dans le Prison on Fire de Ringo Lam en 1987 où il interprète un prisonnier fragile que Chow Yun-fat prendra sous sa coupe. En France, on le remarquera pour la première fois en policier incorruptible dans le Gunmen de Kirk Wong. Cette fois-ci, c'est la bonne et désormais sa carrière est à son apogée quand il accepte le rôle de l'Amant de Jean-Jacques Annaud qui le fera connaître dans le monde entier (ce qui aurait pu se faire bien plus tôt s'il avait accepté de jouer le Dernier empereur de Bertolucci, plutôt que de choisir la version chinoise de Li Han-hsiang qui lui avait demandé en premier). Capable d'interpréter des nobles délicats, des taulards fragiles, des policers idéalistes, des chevaliers valeureux, des personnages de débiles profonds (qu'il interprète remarquablement dans les cultes The Eagle Shooting Heroes et la 92 Legendary La Rose Noire)... Tony Leung Kar-fai tournera énormément jusque 1997.
Après certains problèmes avec les Triades, sa carrière a tourné au ralenti, et il s'est même reconverti dans la chansonnette !.... Mais il est toujours partant pour de nouvelles aventures, en témoigne des films comme The Spy Dad ou Men Suddenly In Black où il est en pleine forme. Quel homme ce Tony !!!
