Cinema Popular, a partnership between acclaimed Hong Kong director Peter Chan Ho-sun (Perhaps Love, The Warlords), renowned Mainland Chinese director/producer Huang Jianxin (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) and Bona International Film Group, is a new breed of film company, set to transform the outlook of Chinese language cinema.
Established in February 2009, the company chose a timely moment to enter the scene: the national box office has shot from 800 million yuan five years ago to last year's 4.4 billion yuan.
Chan envisions Cinema Popular as China's answer to Hollywood's DreamWorks Pictures, making original, if not revolutionary, films that still tap deep into the hearts of mainstream audiences.
Cinema Popular plans to produce 15 films over the next three years, ranging from large-scale blockbusters with A-list stars to medium-sized genre films from new filmmaking talents. Towards this end, Bona International has earmarked 500 million yuan (US$73.09 million) for this endeavour.
Cinema Popular has signed a strategic alliance with the China Film Group, the largest and most influential state-run film enterprise in the country. China Film Group will co-invest and co-distribute films by Cinema Popular.
Cinema Popular's co-founder, Bona International Film Group's president Yu Dong, predicts that Cinema Popular will tally an accumulative box office of 2 billion yuan (US$292 million) in Mainland China and Hong Kong within just three years.
We Pictures, the production company formed by Chan and Huang, who teamed up in The Warlords, will function as a new creative power with both eyes firmly looking towards the ever-growing film market in Greater China, as well as cultivating a new generation of talent for the industry.
Under the framework of We Pictures, the renowned helmers will bring their artistic sensibilities and extensive experience with film industries in both the East and the West to help some of the most promising talents in the region translate their ideas into film projects that will not only score in the box office but win the hearts of a large audience.
Hong Kong will serve as a creative base to develop film projects, which will be overseen by a panel of consultants comprised of filmmaking professionals, media experts and academics to ensure that these film projects can gauge the interests of a much larger and culturally diversified audience. Every aspect of a film from production to distribution and promotion will all be conducted under the roof of Cinema Popular.
