Chan is a seasoned international director and was a co-founder of United Filmmakers Organization (UFO) during the early 1990s which produced a solid track record of box office and critical hits in Hong Kong. Chan has made an indelible mark on both sides of the Pacific with his Hong Kong comedy-dramas “Alan and Eric: Between Hello and Goodbye”, “Tom, Dick & Harry” and “He’s a Woman, She’s a Man”. His commercially and critically acclaimed “Comrades: Almost a Love Story” was voted one of the Ten Best Movies of 1997 by Time Magazine and swept a record-breaking nine Hong Kong Film Awards.

Chan also delivered the romantic comedy “The Love Letter” for Steven Spielberg’s Dreamworks SKG in 1999. In 1998, he was voted one of the top 10 helmers to watch by the influential U.S. trade magazine, Variety.

Under Applause, Chan has co-produced the Japan-Korea-Hong Kong collaboration, “One Fine Spring Day”, served as the Executive Producer on the Thai-Hongkong co-production “Jan Dara”, and produced the Singapore–Hong Kong co-production “The Eye”, its sequel “The Eye 2”, the Hong Kong production “Golden Chicken” as well as its sequel “Golden Chicken 2”. In 2002, Chan served as the Executive Producer on the omnibus horror film “Three” and also directed its Hongkong segment – Going Home. In 2004, Chan once again aligned with Japan and Korea to co-produce the omnibus sequel “Three…Extremes” and served as the Executive Producer and Producer for its Hong Kong segment – Dumplings. In 2005, Chan once again served as the Executive Producer on the “Eye…Infinity”, it is another series of “The Eye”.
