Biography |
 |
Born in Nanjing in 1934 and raised in Shanghai, Grace Chang was one of the most acclaimed stars from the Cathay studios, and an icon of the 1950s-1960s HK cinema. Chang arrived in Hong Kong in 1949 and three years later she joined the acting training classes at the Taishan studios.
Chang’s acting debuts took place the following year in the movie Seven Sisters. She immediately mesmerized audiences. After a few films for Taishan and other film companies, Chang joined in 1955 International (future MP&GI, itself the future Cathay). This is where she made her best works and reached the peak of her fame. Chang truly became a star with Mambo Girl and she subsequently appeared in most of the major releases of the studio until she retired.
Chang often collaborated with director Evan Yang.
Chang's most acclaimed work include: Air Hostess, Sun, Moon and Star and above all The Wild, Wild Rose. In these films, Chang's charisma blended with her singing and dancing skills (when she plays in a musical) hit the spot every time.
In1961, Chang married and slowed down her film output before retiring in 1964 for good.
