Chen E-hsin joined Shaw Brothers as director and scriptwriter in the 60s. Though he was not involved in many productions, he co-directed A Maid From Heaven with famous director Ho Meng-hua. In the same year he directed The Crimson Palm - a high profile production which starred Ivy Ling Po, Chin Ping, Li Ching and Chen Yen-yen.
Chen specializes in costume dramas with historic backgrounds, and heroism as the theme. This theme was epitomized in The Grand Substitution.
