Biography |

Originally named Koh Nakahira, the Japanese director was born in Tokyo on January 3, 1926. During his days in the Ofuna Studio of the Shochiku Motion Picture Co., Nakahira was the assistant director of various renowned helmers, including Kinoshita Keisuke, Kurosawa Akira and Shibuya Minori. He joined Nikkatsu in 1954, and got his directorial debut with Fruit Of Madness two years later.
The Shaw Brothers began to recruit Japanese talents in the 1960s. Nakahira accepted the offer and continued his film career in Hong Kong, under the Chinese pseudonym “Yang Shu-hsi”. He directed four films during that time, with three of them remakes of his previous films - Interpol, Summer Heat and Diary Of A Lady-Killer. His only original production in Hong Kong was Trapeze Girl..
Nakahira returned to Japan after finishing Trapeze Girl, and helmed his last film Henokyoku before passing away on September 11, 1978.
