Biography |
|
Although the large bulk of his filmography consist of either buffonish cops or slimy villains , Paul Chun acting talent is so great that not only can he always play these brand of character with a colorful brilliance but he also do all sort of others roles rangin from the most broad and funny to the most moving with equal ease. This is no surprise when you know his family! His parents (Yan Huat and Hung Mei) were renowned actors and his brothers are no less than David Chiang and Derek Yee (half-brother). Though he has never been a star like his siblings, his acting career is nonetheless very rich and lasting. The variety of roles he was offered and the couple acting awards he got largely show the recognition of his talent.
Like many actors' offspring (Bruce Lee, Petrina Fung Bo Bo and his own brother David Chiang), Paul Chun makes his first moves in cinema as a child-actor and appears in a handful of films between 1949 and 1954. He returns to the big screen as an adult in the mid sixties. He can even be seen in the partly made in H-K US production, The Sand Pebbles in which he has a small part as a young militant student having the dubious honor of being killed by film's star Steve McQueen during a fight. This foreign production It is an exception in his long filmography, as the rest of his career is done only in Chinese films. Unlike his brother David Chiang who starts working in Hong Kong Mandarin cinema at about the same time, Paul Chun first appears in Cantonese cinema by playing in more than a dozen films between 1966 and 1970. It is only once the Cantonese film industry collapsed that he joins the Shaw Brothers where his talents as character actor are used in all sorts of films: from musicals (The Yellow Muffler 1971) to epic martial arts films (The Water Margin, All Men are Brothers, Fourteen Amazons), wherein he can successfully plays the virtuous knight as well as the villain. He also appears in the first films directed by his brother David Chiang as a determined police inspector in The Drug Addicts and a goofy gangster for Mad World Of Fools.
Towards the mid-70s, Paul Chun leaves the Shaw and goes for several years to Taiwan a great producers of K-F movies at the time. He notably appears in 36 Crazy Fists and Dance of Death, two productions of Jackie Chan's director friend :Chan Chi Hwa. He also has a part in Raining In The Mountain, a classy production shot in South Korea by the great King Hu. He also plays in a couple of Taiwanese productions starring his brother David Chiang (Lost Kung Fu Secrets and Six Directions Of Boxing). At the turn of the 80s, he himself produces a film The Legend of the Owl where Chiang both stars and directs, and whose screenplay was co-written by the youngest of the family Derek Yee. In this nutty Naked Gun/Air Plane style parody, Paul Chun is having a ball of a time fun playing a ninja assassin in drag..
With the collapse of the Taiwanese film industry in the early eighties, Paul Chun returns to Hong Kong where he swiftly revives his film career as the colony's cinema is in full effervescence. From there, he portrays mostly his token roles: the filthy scoundrel and above all the tyrannical and ludicrous police officer buffoon . Actually, what Paul Chun generally embodies are authority figures who are either feared or loathed because they abuse their power and are totally unscrupulous (the corrupted cop in Lee Rock for instance, the obnoxious trafficker in Wild Search, the shady businessman in TKidnap Of Wong Chak Fai). Or characters that people like to ridicule (boastful police chiefs in Rosa, I Love Maria and Heroic Trio, his parts in Stephen Chow's films like the headmaster in Fight Back To School, the vice roy in Royal Tramp 2or the rightous but ineffectual judge in Justice, My Foot !). He even sometimes combines those characteristics to play on this double scale simultaneously as the sinister and comical king of gamblers in All For the Winner, the producer in Viva Erotica. However, we can sometimes find him playing with more subtlety more benigh and friendly patriarchal figure although they tend generally to be most uneffectuel (the overprotective uncle in In The Line Of Duty 3 the wise elder of Fist Of Legend, the compromised policeman and father in China Strike Force).
This said, even if he constantly gets back to them, Paul Chun isn't limited to this type of roles. He can also play many other kinds of characters, from the funniest to the subtlest. Among his most noticeable performances, we can remember the priest in search of redemption in To Hell With The Devil or the fay opera actor in Peking Opera Blues which will get him an award for best supporting actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
He gets some of his best parts by working with his half-brother Derek Yee who knows perfectly well how to use Paul's acting talent in giving him demanding parts. That's the case for example with The Lunatics in which he interprets a mentally-ill person who is both moving and scary. Afterwards, Paul Chun keeps giving his best in his brother's films (Full Throttle, Viva Erotica). Besides, he gets a second award for best supporting actor for Yee's drama C'est La Vie, Mon Cheri.
