Biography

Born in 1947 (or in 46?) in Hong Kong (her family was from the Chinese province of Guizhou) under the name Ni Fang Ning (倪芳凝), Fang Ying spent her childhood in Beijing before returning to the former British colony.

Fang started in the film business around 15-16 (1962) by enrolling in the Shaw Brothers studio’s Southern Actor's Training Course. She first appeared on screen in movies starring Linda Lin Dai, such as The Last Woman of Shang for instance. Fang’s career was really launched in 1963 with the Chinese opera film A Maid From Heaven, directed by Chan Yat San, Ho Meng Hua and Yan Jun and written by Li Han Hsiang and opposite the great actress Ivy Ling Po. Fang earned the moviegoers affection thanks to her pure and fresh image. Often cast as a supporting role in Shaw Brothers productions, Fang had her own special fame in the 1960s.

In 1968, she married the businessman Huang Xi Xiang (黃錫祥), heir of the bakery empire Kee Wah Bakery (奇華餅家). Fang retired from the screens in the early 1970s, after completing What's Good For A Goose. She gave birth to a son and a daughter. The couple broke up in 1978 but stayed close.

In the mid 1970s, Fang started a career as TV host and TV-series actress for the now late local TV channel CTV. She witnessed the beginnings of a filmmaker called Tsui Hark.

Fang studied set design and came back in the film world behind the camera this time in the early 1980s. She was an artistic director, set designer, costume designer and ever sometimes make-up artist.

She contributed a lot to the artistic merits of Yon Fan’s films (Lost Romance). In 1987, Fang Ying even won the Golden Horse for Best Costume Design for the movie Immortal Story.

After fighting a pancreatic cancer for a year, Fang Ying lost the battle and passed away on January 13th 2009.
