Biography |

Ann Hui was born in the province of Liaoning in 1947. Girl of a Chinese father and a Japanese mother, she is a fan of Chang Cheh and King Hu movies and the new wave movies. It was thus normal that she made her cinematographic studies in London. Came back to HK, she could work with her preferred directors (King Hu...).
Then, she directed for television several fictions and reports. With her first movies, very realistic, she became quickly the head of the HK New Wave. Vietnam also worried her, and so she directed many movies on this subject, whose Story of Woo Viet with the now legendary Chow Yun-Fat.
Even if she is famous for her dramas and tragedies, she is also at the origin of a wu xia pian directed in China : The Romance of Book and Sword.
