Biography

Becky Lam Pik-Kei: the shooting star.

Becky Lam, who would rather hang out in the streets than go to class, was only 16 when she was spotted by David Lai, a young director-to-be. Lai wanted to make a movie about the “Pretty Sisters” phenomenon, these troubled young girls who spent their time hanging out in the streets and were symptomatic of a generation that had lost its bearings. He was thus looking for newcomer actresses to convey the sense of realism he believed could only come from real-life experience. He saw in Becky Lam the perfect symbol for this disoriented youth and immediately offered her a part in what was to become his first feature film: Lonely Fifteen.

Seldom interested by the prospect of becoming a movie star, the young girl, who had quite a strong personality, laid down her own conditions: she would have to be the lead and have a right to modify the script when she saw fit. Lai was so certain of his choice, that he agreed to her conditions and cast her, alongside another one of his protégé: Irene Wan Pik Ha.

The movie became one of the most publicly and critically acclaimed films of 1982, going as far as to get 8 nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Picture. Becky Lam would go on to win Best Actress and Best Newcomer of 1982 for her performance in the film.

However, the young woman couldn’t seem to be bothered by her newfound fame. She continued to show her lack of interest for the promising career that was offered to her, refusing to invest herself in the promotion of the film while ignoring offers for new movies.

But Becky Lam’s life would take a new turn at one of these promotional events. Indeed, attending one, she was introduced to the younger brother of famous Filipino-Chinese singer/actress Teresa Carpio. She immediately fell in love and married him, leaving behind the promising acting career that awaited her.

Thus ended the reign of Becky Lam who filled Hong Kong screens with her radiating beauty for the length of a movie only to disappear from Hong Kong’s cinematographic landscape as fast as she had entered it.
