Biography |

The very prolific actor, Walter Tso is one of the most familiar faces for Cantonese audience.
His parents moved to Hong Kong a short time after his birth (15th of December 1916, in the Guandong province). When he was still a schoolboy, the young Walter used to sneak out of school to watch movies. It was then that he decided to be an actor. At the age of 15 he went to Shanghai (at that time, the center of the chinese film industry) and became an extra, working in local productions.
When the power of the Hong Kong film industry grew, he returned and found a job as assistant Director. Soon he appeared in front of the camera and get bigger roles. In 1941, Cho had already played in 80 movies but the japenese invasion brought an end to his work.
After gaining wealth via the black market, he went back into movies in 1946, playing in Cantonese successes including the famous Wong Fei Hong series. Before long, he was able to start his own studio in 1948. However, despite his career, Cho was a compulsive gambler and regularly lost a lot of money. During the 60’s, Cho starred in Wu Xia movies like Buddha's Palm, and detective stories in his well-known 'Detective Inspector' role.
In the 70’s, Cho’s career slowed down, he worked on TV and appeared in few movies. The 80’s saw Cho making guest appearances in popular movies as Sammo Hung‘s 'Lucky Stars' series. In 1990 he decided to retire and moved to England but he felt like a third class citizen there and returned again to Hong Kong in 1993. He worked up until 1997 on TV and still made appearances in movies.
