Biography

Ho-cheung Pang was born in Hong Kong in 1973. At the age of 15, he started using the obsolete video camera to direct a short film with his elder brother. Since high school graduation, he studied abroad in Taiwan. After half year of his studies, he went back to Hong Kong and he worked at the Hong Kong Asian Television Limited as a gag show scriptwriter. In the meantime, he made his first debut-writing novel and film reviews in various newspapers and magazines as well.

In 1995, Hong Kong Commercial Radio hired Pang as a scriptwriter, and he began writing the script of the radio drama, “Out of the Blue” which was being adapted for a short film directed by creative writer, Jay Lamb. This film has gained its reputation in many oversea film festivals.

In 1997, at the age of 24, Pang conducted an 18-month research, and began writing his first novel, “Full-Time Killer” The novel was extremely popular at that time, and it had been sold for more than 100,000 copies in Hong Kong once it was published. Thereafter, the story was being sold and revised as a radio program. By the year of 2001, filmmakers Johnny To and Ka-fai, Wai adapted the story of “Full-Time Killer” and made it into a feature film, starring Andy Lau and Sorimachi Takashi.

When Pang was still the host of both television and broadcasting program, he decided to go for his dream to become a film director. Thus, in the year of 1999, he invested USD15, 000 to write and direct his first short film, “Summer Exercise”. This film did not only win an award in the Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards, but also became the first nominated Hong Kong short film in the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan, as well as being invited to various international film festivals.

Pang then started preparing his plans for shooting movies. In 2001, at the age of 27, Pang used USD500, 000 production cost and 15 shooting days to finish his first feature film, “You Shoot, I Shoot”. He completed the film with limited production cost as well as shooting days. Although the movie was also a story about killers, it was a totally different style compare with his earlier novel, “Full-Time Killer”. The story is about a professional killer who became one of the many individuals who ended up with negative net equity due to the Asian financial crisis, and he then carried on his life tenaciously through struggles and hard work. With its awkward style and its vivid sense of black humor, “You Shoot, I Shoot” was acclaimed by critics both in Hong Kong and overseas. Hong Kong International Film Festival considered this film as “a piece of work with its real heart hidden in wilderness”. This film was nominated by an American movie web site-Ain’t It Cool News as one of the Top 10 Hong Kong Movies 2001. It also took part in the Pusan Film Festival in Korea, and gained a full house cheer and applause. Taking account of “You Shoot, I Shoot”, Pang won the Best Screenplay in the Hong Kong Golden Bauhinia Awards and was also nominated the Best Screenplay in Hong Kong Film Awards.

In 2003, Pang was driven by an idea to dedicate to one of the most famous Hong Kong night clubs-Tonnochy Nightclub. He then began to write and directed his second featured film, “Men Suddenly in Black”. The movie was a masterpiece that fantastically combined the issue of Hong Kong’s economic depression and love affairs of couples, two seemingly unrelated issues were brought into the movie with his bright sense of humor. “Men Suddenly in Black” obtained USD1,400,000 gross profit of box office in Hong Kong. Moreover, Pang won the Best New Director, and Tony Leung Kar-Fai won the Best Supporting Actor in Hong Kong Film Awards because of this film.

In 2004, Pang started filming his third feature film “Beyond Our Ken”, which is a story about a young couple after their breakup, the boy posted an erotic picture of the girl online. The girl was trying to retrieve her photos with his new girl friend together.

In October 2004, a retrospective program, “Hong Kong New Power - Pang Ho-Cheung” held in Japan by the Tokyo International Film Festival, works including “Summer Exercise”, “You Shoot, I Shoot” and “Men Suddenly in Black”  were screened in the program. Also, Pang’s film “Beyond Our Ken” featured in the Tokyo International Film Festival as world premier in 2004. “Beyond Our Ken” has also brought Pang another trophy - The Best Screenplay in the Hong Kong Golden Bauhinia Awards in 2005 and this film was also selected as Top 10 Chinese Movies.
In Jan 2005, inspired by his former assistant’s true story, Pang and his editing partner, Wenders Li wrote it into his fourth feature film “AV”. This is a story about four Hong Kong youngsters devise an ingenious way to get laid -- use government money to hire a Japanese porn star and fake a film shoot! The movie is selected to screen at international film festivals in Udine, New York, Hawaii and Tokyo.

In July, Pang starts filming his fifth feature film “Isabella”, which is a story about broken relationship between father and daughter. This is the first time for Pang to be a producer.
