Interview conducted in Hong Kong by Arnaud Lanuque

HKCinemagic : And Men Suddenly in Black was, in a way, this occasion. You seem to have had a lot of fun in the shooting.
M Y : I had indeed a lot of fun because the people I worked with, I thought, some of them were very fun. I just wish I can always have more and more opportunity to do movies of this kind in Hong Kong, to work with so many actors who are already famous. But it's very hard because in Hong Kong, a lot of time they choose actors or actresses from their company. Because there are many different companies, they have their own actors. So you constantly see movies in HK that use the same and same artists.

HKCinemagic : How were your relations with the other female actors? Was it like in the movie, Teresa Mo is the leader, or something more friendly and relax?
M Y : It was very friendly. There wasn't very much pressure.

HKCinemagic : How would you describe the work of Edmond Pang?
M Y : He is very funny and very laid back. But on set, he is very nervous because there are all those people who are in the business for much longer than him. So once we were shooting, he was very nervous. But once he's not shooting, he's more relaxed and very outgoing.

HKCinemagic : Did he describe you the way he wanted to shoot the movie?
M Y : He didn't exactly tell me what he wanted. I just read the script and basically thought “Oh, I think the character is like this”. And then, whenever we shot the scene, it would come to me and tell me “That's exactly how I want it.” So I knew I was going in the right direction. I think most of the time in Hong Kong , you won't have a very formal meeting where there will be discussions like “ok, your character should be like this”. It's basically what you think it is and if there's something wrong, they will correct you.

HKCinemagic : Can you talk about the potential remake of Come Drink With Me?
M Y : I'm still interested in doing it but it's in working process. It might be a little bit different from what people think but it will still be something related.

HKCinemagic : Do you intend to continue your career in HK or in the USA ?
M Y : I think for me, because I'm born in America , so of course, I would love to be in America and work in America . But right now, I'm going to continue to work in Hong Kong and in mainland China . Once there is opportunity for me to move back, I might do it but I'll always be going back and forth like Chow Yun Fat or Maggie Cheung. Actually, my dream is still to commit to musical theatre. So one day, I want to make it in New York or London . I already did musicals in Hong Kong , four to this day. Musical theatre is more my passion. Recently, people have found out I do musicals, that's actually what I learned in college. Even if money is less important, if I had to choose, I think I would do musicals. But for Chinese born American, to get jobs, you need to get both ways; you need to take everything you can.

HKCinemagic : Are you working on some new projects right now?
M Y : I'm working on an album, my first one.

HKCinemagic : It's surprising they didn't ask you earlier!
M Y : Yeah, actually when I first came to Hong Kong , I first went to a record company. But as my Cantonese wasn't good at all at that time… I think for the market during that time, you had to speak Cantonese. Now, you can sing a little bit mandarin or English. But during that time, it wasn't possible so that's why I wasn't able to find a record company. Now that I have already started my career, I have to go a different way. People already know me so that I have to make it as a new person.

HKCinemagic : One last word for the French readers of this interview?
M Y : I love France ! I love Paris!
