Left destitute by a chronically ill mother, Yip Yin-sheung resorts to stealing from the governor's house and is made by his mentor to repent and apologise to the governor. The governor, who used to serve in the troops with Yip's late father, seizes the chance to return the master's old favour by taking the mother and son in. He even promises his beloved daughter Tit Sau-yung to the young man. When Sau-yung learns that Yip is obliged to honour a betrothal sealed in his childhood, she becomes dejected and runs away.
